The final entry in this year’s pilot season. Does it go out with a bang or a whimper?

The concept of this series is pretty basic. A hitman is murdered and finds himself in hell. A demon named Mandy offers him a choice. She’s a fallen angel and seeking redemption. John is seeking redemption. Mandy will find targets for John and he has 7 days to kill the target or he goes to hell forever. Once he’s killed the target, he moves on.

Guns are no problem. Money is no problem. But he’s still a man and if he dies again, it’s over.

Unlike the other Pilot Season entries, which went for a brief look at a larger picture, this is a much simpler concept. It’s simpler, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. It’s a good concept and makes for a decent read. Would it work as a long term series? Probably not, as it would get old after awhile. But for a mini-series the concept is decent.

And it really works as a one-shot.

Hil & Levin’s script is simple. It’s not weighted down. There’s enough to get a feel for John the hitman, who he is and why he is. But it doesn’t bog down with needless details. It flows smoothly as it jumps locations. The story opens with a flashback, and moves smoothly and clearly from the past to the moment of the flashback where we see what we thought was going on really wasn’t.

I think Asset is still my favorite concept from this year’s Pilot Season, but I think this is the one that works the best in the Pilot Season format.

Phil Noto’s work is on par with what you’d expect. This is the style of book that is made for Noto’s talents. The only downside is that all of the female characters look basically alike. When Helena shows up again, I thought it was the young girl from previous pages.

Pilot Season: 7 Days From Hell receives
4 out of 5

Good concept that fits into the Pilot Season model.
