Skullkickers #2

The first issue was a hit, Troy didn’t feel it was. How does issue #2 do?

Published by: Image Comics
Written by: Jim Zubkavich
Art by: Edwin Huang
Colored by: Misty Coats
Lettered by: Marshall Dillon
Cover: Chris Stevens w/ Saejin Oh

I’m not sure what to think of this issue. It seemed kind of meandering. There weren’t that many funny moments. Alot of moments of forced humor. And there were some odd captions and sound effects that seem out of place and juvenile in some spots.

When the dwarf draws his axes, it reads “weapons ready”, and when the dwarf knocks another character down we get a sound effect says “imbalance”.

It took me out of the story and ruined the flow. They didn’t come across as humorous.

Neither did the characters. The method of torture got a slight chuckle but the funniest moment of the whole book was the walking scene and again, the lettering took away from the overall effect instead of enhancing it.

Instead of focusing on the plot, the mission to retreive the body, this issue served to expand the storyline adding some elements that could prove to be unnecessary and making the entire thing too unweildy or complicated.

I really don’t know what to make of this book. It tries to be funny, but it’s not. It’s a fantasy, but the presence of the gun takes away from the overall fantasy elements, especialy where the design of Baldy doesn’t fit in with the rest of the world.

The art by Huang is decent. I’m not liking the lack of eyes. That is distracting. It also detracts from the figures. The female merchant at the end, the small eyes really stands out in some of the shots involving her. And doesn’t stand out in a good way. It looks odd.

Skullkickers #2 receives
2 out of 5

I try to give new series 2-3 issues to get going, #3 will really have to step it up.
