Zeb Wells and Clayton Crain bring us the return of Carnage. Was it worth the money?

There’s a pretty brief “catch-up” spread in the middle of the issue that is supposed to bring you up to speed on what happened to Carnage and who this 6-limbed Spider-Creature is. Does it work? To an extent. It’s not perfect and unless you’re up to date with Spider-Man and Carnage you’ll still be left wondering what exactly is going on.

Even if up to date, you’ll still be left wondering that.

But in a good way.

Wells writes a good story. Plausibly bringing Stark and Parker together, with some humor thrown in. The narrative that opens is a bit odd and doesn’t seem to belong, as it’s not needed and doesn’t really add anything to the story, in fact it disappears in the 2nd half of the issue.

The new characters introduced are one dimensional, but at least conversationally interesting.

Wells sets up a “good” monster angle but we’re left with more questions then answers. Which works good for a mini-series first issue.

There are alot of jumping points, where the aart and script don’t necessarily sync up, or the art seems to move a couple of paces without the script. Apparently Iron Man used his repulsors on 6-Arms and without the words to describe it, you would have had a hard time telling exactly what happened. The sequance is oddly laid out.

This happens a couple of times in the issue.

Crain’s art is good, at it’s core, but the storytelling isn’t as good as it should be. The action jumps to much and doesn’t flow smoothly. For a book that is on a bi-monthly schedule I’d expect more and better.

Interesting story and the script keeps it humming along.
