Death (yes, the one from Vertigo) comes calling on Lex Luthor.

It’s an interesting issue. We see Lex going through all the stages of grief, very quickly, and when he gets to “acceptance” that’s when Lex rears up and refuses to accept that he’s dead and he has no say in where he goes.

The two have an interesting conversation. I’ve never read any of the Vertigo appearances of Death, so I’m not sure how she’s supposed to act, but this is what I would expect from this personification of death. She’s light hearted, kind of flightly and not really serious. We can tell that her presence, and her personality, are not what Lex would have expected and it puts him off his game at the beginning.

Watching Lex deal with his death is interesting. He never loses being “Lex Luthor”. The ego is there. The belief that his is the right cause and that he is the one to do it. None of that goes away as he goes through the stages of grief in Lex Luthor style.

Cornell does a masterful job of handling Lex and Death. Death doesn’t talk so much as she guides Lex in certain directions, steering the conversation towards a result that only she seems to know.

How Lex survives, as we know he has to, is a bit of a twist and definately sets the stage for some larger stories in the near future.

I like the way Pete Woods draws this issue. There’s no changes in layouts, panel borders, background designs or anything. He draws it as he would a normal issue of the title. That Lex and Death are in the afterlife wouldn’t be noticable, at least until they go for the private chat. That’s what I really like about the way it’s done.

Woods art is clean. I prefer his Death to the one that David Finch does on the cover.

An interesting little encounter that sets the stage for bigger things.
