The only thing Silent Hill that I’ve seen was the movie, which was poorly received. I’ve never played the game or read any of the comics. So I was a little leery about reviewing this as I know nothing of the mythos.

Luckily, this mini-series is written in such a way that you don’t need to know anything about Silent Hill to enjoy the issue. I’m sure the fans of the franchise would get more out of it then I did, but as a non-fan it works as a creepy story on it’s own.

The script is decent, but it’s really the art that makes this book.

The story is creepy enough, with just a few moments to set the mood. There’s just enough weirdness to set it all on edge.

But the art by Menton3 is extremely moody and sets the tone. It reminds me of work by Ashley Wood, but not as extreme as Wood. The characters are heavily detailed and expressive. The backgrounds are sparse but then detailed and warped as required.

In some panels the characters are black and white with color backgrounds and in others they are just shadows, where in some they are extremely detailed. It alternates from page to page, panel to panel. It could very easily have been a major mess, with no consistent style, but it works.

Menton3 uses circles alot to highlight different parts of the work. It could be a woman’s pointing hand, or zeroing in on an eye. It’s an interesting device where it could, and usually does, be a distracting. But in this case it works.

The artist makes some interesting choices with the layouts and the panel borders.

It works very well in helping create the mood for this story.

Silent Hill: Past Life #1 receives
4 out of 5

Interesting and unique art creates a moody story.
