The cover says this is the conclusion of the “Fall of the New Mutants” storyline, but it’s not. I was disappointed when I saw the cover because I didn’t want this storyline to end.

Wells is crafting an excellant story. It has history from the old New Mutants run, the Inferno babies. It shows exactly how close these people are to eachother and what they mean to eachother. Even the bad guys are sympathetic. You feel bad for Ulysses when he says “my wife wouldn’t recognize me”. It drives home what desperation would do to a man. You feel bad for Face and his treatment. You even feel bad for Bob and that he doesn’t understand why Sunspot would kill his other self. And you feel bad for Sunspot.

There’s not much in the way of action, but this is definately not a boring book. Wells is setting up for a slam dunk of an ending next issue. Wells truly knows and loves these characters, it’s evident in his work.

What the lasting effects on the team will be at the arc’s end should be interesting and hopefully will carry over into the next arc and the new writer.

I hope that Leonard Kirk remains on the title when the new writer comes on board. His work is stellar. He excels at is all, especially emotion and the expressions. When Ulysses uses the Soulsword on Pixie you can see the comtemplation and even regret. You can see the joy in Sam’s expression even as Dani is being tortured. The determination in Sunspots. Kirk does an incredible job.

His work is part of what made this arc so good. His demon-altered soldiers and mutants were great. An excellant mesh between human and demonic.
