The first issue of the new creative team on Detective Comics. It seems kind of strange that for a title called Detective Comics that it wouldn’t star the world’s greatest detective, Bruce Wayne. This is one of the Dick Grayson-Batman titles and in a way it actually works because it plays on a short-lived part of his past. For awhile he was on the Bludhaven PD and that gets referenced here a couple of times.

The story is about someone stealing the “tools” of Batman villians from Police lock-up and it getting out into the population.

With Bruce and Tim Drake, people seem to forget that Dick Grayson has some detective in him as well, so this title will serve to help accent that, as well as being a darker look at Grayson’s run as Batman.

Synder’s tale is decent. It’s not anything ground shaking or truly special, but it is a good story. The strength is in a couple of character moments. The story seems to promise more character moments, which will help work in it’s favor because it will need something to help set it apart from the other Batman books.

Jock’s work is the strength of this story. It gives the whole thing a unique and moody feel. It feels dark and gritty, which makes for a good look for a Dick Grayson Batman because Grayson isn’t as moody as Bruce.

Jock’s layouts are great. They vary greatly but still allows the story to flow naturally without any odd jumps in in the flow. I’m not sure how his style will work with the more super-heroic and flashy aspects of Batman’s word, but as long as it remains in the dark and gritty part of Batman then it’ll work.
