This is my first foray into the world of Firebreather. I hadn’t checked out any of the prior series but I did end up watching the movie on Cartoon Network.

Holmgang picks up right after the end of the second mini-series “All The Best Heroes Are Orphans”. You don’t need to have read any of the other issues to get into this one. It’s pretty easy to grasp what is going on.

Duncan Rosenblatt has to contend with the normal high school problems well being part monster, and looking like part monster. Hester does a good job of combining the two worlds. Duncan has to deal with his rage, being used by his best friend for his strength, trying to decide if a girl is not dating him because of how he looks or because they are different personalities, he has to deal with the fact that he might be as superficial as he accuses others of being.

Well doing all that he has to deal with harpies, robots, a UN enforced watcher/handler and the death of his father.

The strength of this lies in that Hester doesn’t get bogged down by any of it. He doesn’t let the series become about just one aspect of Duncan’s complicted life, but just uses the pieces to flesh out the story more.

As the first issue of a new mini-series, this one does a great job of setting it up. Hester creates multiple subplots naturally, each growing off of the other and revolving out of Duncan’s actions in each case. He also continues plot points set up in the prior mini-series but in a way that doesn’t confuse or alienate a new reader.

Andy Kuhn’s art looks like a cross between Tim Sale and Mike Mignolas work. He doesn’t rely on shadows as much as those other two do, but his figures definately have that feel to them. It’s good looking stuff and is an interesting style for this book.

Firebreather: Holmgang #1 receives
4 out of 5

Between this and the movie, I’ll be tracking down all of Firebreather.
