Widowmaker was originally meant to be a crossover between “Hawkeye & Mockingbird” and “Black Widow”, but Marvel decided to make it a mini-series. The “Hawkeye & Mockingbird” series has been canceled with the creative team on tap to do a Hawkeye mini-series after Widowmaker finishes up. Not sure the status of the Black Widow ongoing.

I’m a fan of McCann’s “Hawkeye & Mockingbird”, he has a great handle on the two characters, so I was looking forward to see how he handled the Black Widow. He does a good job. The interplay between Hawkeye, Mockingbird, Black Widow and Dominc Fortune was excellant.

I also liked how McCann worked Dominic Fortune into the story more as well. Instead of just being a supporting character, it’s looking like he has as much of a connection with the events as the main participants do.

It’ll be interesting to see how they tie Ronin’s past into what Bendis set up in New Avengers when he introduced the Ronin character.

This was a top notch spy thriller, and McCann excels at that. Even more then what had been set up in “Hawkeye & Mockingbird” this is an old school super hero spy comic. The plot is feasible, with the “breadcrumbs” being laid making alot of sense and the directions that the characters take to get to the point all work well. No plot holes here.

I’ve become a big fan of Lopez’s art. He’s got an extremely clean and crisp style. Highly detailed. His figures are well proportioned. There are no awkward poses or odd camera angles.

He’s got a good grasp of storytelling, his panels flowing smoothly with the story.

Excellant beginning to the mini-series.
