This issue opens with Ares death at the hands of the Sentry. He awakens on Charon’s ferry. He thinks he’s on his way to hell but Charon informs him that he has been granted entry to the Elysium Fields, a just reward. He died in battle, living up to his name and his calling. His uncle, Pluto, attacks wanting to deny Ares an eternity of peace.

They battle and Pluto gains the upper hand. Ares realizes that this is just another in an endless cycle he and Pluto have gone through. Ares is imprisoned in Pluto’s realm and constantly escapes only to be stopped by Plutos minions. Pluto has to devote over half his army to keeping Ares prisoner.

Hela shows up, referencing a scene from the main Chaos War book. The Chaos King is attacking and Ares is released to lead the soldiers of Hades in the attack on the Chaos King.

Ares remembers a battle along time ago when he fought the Chaos King, who was still calling himself Amatsu-Mikaboshi. Amatsu-Mikaboshi had kidnapped Alexander, Ares son. Ares and Hercules fought a long and seemingly never ending battle in trying to rescue Alexander. Nightmare appeared trying to work a deal between Ares and Amatsu-Mikaboshi.

Nightmare has long enjoyed the chaos and war that Amatsu-Mikaboshi and Ares bring. It causes many Nightmares in the mortals. Nightmare wants them all to join together and work to create never-ending nightmares. Ares refuses and Amatsu-Mikaboshi attacks Nightmare sending him back to his own realm.

The next day Ares slays Amatsu-Mikaboshi and rescues Alexander.

Back in the present, Ares confronts the Chaos King. Ares is pierced by the Chaos King and feels his body being taken over.

Ares is now truly in hell. His mind is free and he knows he is now leading his enemy’s army into battle. He knows he will win but that the victory will bring the doom to everything.
