G.I. Joe Renegades Episodes 6 & 7

I’m filling in for our regular reviewer, Zuludelta, for a couple weeks, so here we go..

I was not a fan of Episodes 4 and 5 at all. Not just because of the ninja stuff, which I have never liked large amounts of in my Joe, but because they weren’t very well done. The animation seemed weaker and the story was definately weaker.

Thankfully, the creative team knocked it out of the park with the 2 parter “Homecoming”.

This was Duke-centric story, but we ended up learning more about the character of Flint and his motivations/personality then anything we learned about Duke. When I had first heard that Flint and Duke were going to be old high school football rivals I groaned, big time. It just seemed so cheesy. But the writers did an excellant job with the flashback. They way they laid it all out, it all made perfect sense.

They were on opposing teams and Duke was the local hero; big time QB and off to a big school with full scholarship, a career in the NFL awaiting; but in the championship game Flint tackled Duke and saved the game but in the process Duke was hurt and lost his scholarships.

The writers and art team did a great job at showing Flint’s concern and regret when he realized what had happened. Flint, already going to West Point, talks Duke into joining the military and then helps/guides/follows Duke’s career. So when Duke is thought to go “bad”, Flint takes it personally.

And that all makes sense. Every bit of it. Amazing job done by the team tying what could have been a horrible idea into something that works really well.

The rest of the episode was equally as well done. Even the ninja appearances weren’t bad at all. Well written, character driven, enough action to satisfy the kids.

And the animation was a cut above what we had seen previously, especially episodes 4 & 5. Except for a couple of design choices (Storm Shadow, I’m looking at you; and I still don’t like Duke’s hair and how it sits on his head), the show looked great. All the issues I had had previously were gone.

Here’s hoping this great work continues onto the rest of the season.
