It’s been awhile since I read a Hellboy story, which is sad because I’ve always loved reading them. This one was no exception.

It’s a vampire tale with a bit of a twist. It’s a very haunting tale.

Mignola does alot with a little. There’s not much that really goes on in this issue, but you don’t notice as the story grabs you and sweeps you along. It’s a bit of a slow start but as soon as we’re introduced to the old man, the story picks up. Most of the issue is taken up by the old man telling two tales.

And it’s those two tales that drive this story and can drive future stories. The seed laid in this issue is just too big to leave alone. Mignola has to take it and run with it.

The main story of this book is the haunting tale. Can hear the old man talking as you read the story, the catch in his throat as he reaches certain parts, the fear in his voice.

And poor little Mary. I hope that Hellboy puts her out of her misery and she can rest in peace. There’s traces of Hellboy’s humor, but it’s subdued as if Hellboy is affected by the mood of the story.

As much as I love Mignola’s art, this story wouldn’t have been the same with him doing it. Scott Hampton’s pencils give the entire thing a sad feel. The story flows smoothly, the work creating the haunting melody that accompanies the story.

Hampton’s pencils are detailed, the age of the man apparent as is his grief.

Hellboy: The Sleeping and the Dead receives
5 out of 5

Reading this makes me wonder why it’s been so long since I read a Hellboy story.
