Liu gives X-23 a good voice. For a character that hasn’t always been well received, Liu is doing a good job of giving the series a solid foundation and developing the character of Laura Kinney, aka X-23. The addition of Gambit to the supporting cast is an interesting choice, but so far the two work well together and play off eachother good. Liu has a good handle on Gambit and his character.

The story isn’t much in this issue. It’s more set-up for following issues then anything else. Just used to get X from Point A to Point B so the main parts of this arc can happen. But it doesn’t feel like it’s a wasted issue. Liu gives some weight to pretty much everything that happens in this issue. The conversation with the truck driver. The conversation with Alice in the restaurant. The conversation with Gambit. All of it helps support the character of X, helps us have an understanding of what and how she thinks.

You can tell where Conrad ends and Checchetto starts. Conrad’s work is growing on me. At first I didn’t think it fit the character, but I’m liking the harshness of his work and it is now starting to fit with the character of X. Checchetto’s art isn’t as polished but it’s not bad.

X-23 #4 receives
4 out of 5

I’m liking the character of X-23 and the voice she’s being given by Liu.
