This issue is part one of “Reign of Doomsday”.

The issue opens with Steel fighting Doomsday. We have no idea how Doomsday got there, but that he’s been there for awhile and Steel is the only one around that can stop him.

The story goes from the present to just prior to the start of Steel’s fight with Doomsday. It’s not hard to follow, but it does make the story jumpy as Steel narrates that he had no choice but to fight Doomsday. Apparently he’s always known this day would come and he’s ready for it, he’s resigned himself to his fate.

It seems kind of odd that Steel would react that way. That it comes across that he’s known he’d face Doomsday again, but considering he’s never faced Doomsday as Steel only as John Henry Irons, it makes the story seem pretty odd.

That we also don’t know where Doomsday came from or how he got there makes it feel like we’re dumped into the middle of a storyline instead of the first part. It comes across as someone that has a passing knowledge of Steel but no real care for the character. It’s almost by-the-numbers. Steel does good with the fight, but Doomsday gets the upper hand, Steel manages to stop him, then has to sacrifice himself to save innocents.

Not the most exciting story and doesn’t work well as part one of Reign of Doomsday as we have no clue how Doomsday got there, where he came from, and all we know is that he carries the apparently dead Steel away.

Odd way to start the “event” off.

Benes art is decent but I wouldn’t have realized it was him except for the credits. I don’t know what it was about the work but it just didn’t look like Benes normal stuff. It was more subdued. Even the characters don’t look like normal Benes-characters. It’s decent but nothing spectacular.

Steel #1 receives
2.5 out of 5

Flat issue that drops us into the middle of a story that doesn’t make sense.
