These seem like odd characters to get their own one-shot, but it works. And works well. This issue serves two purposes. It shows what Bill (Congorilla) and Mikaal (Starman) have been up to well the rest of the JLA dealt with the Crime Syndicate and Omega Man. It also ties up some loose plotlines from all the way back in Cry for Justice.

The two stars are definately not your average heroes. It’s nice to see them interacting. Can definately tell that the two have developed a deep friendship and would do anything for eachother. Robinson does a good job of showing the friendship between them, as well as their approach to heroics and differing from most others.

Robinson’s story is light with an feel of adventure and even some fun to it. Adding Rex the Wonder Dog and Buddy Baker (Animal Man) as well as Tasmanian Devil, to the mix makes for a fun book to read. The plot ties up the loose ends from Bill’s “Cry For Justice” appearance nicely with what is going on in JLA now. Under Robinson’s care, Congorilla is turning into a very interesting and fun character. And it’s nice to see Robinson writing a Starman again.

The story jumps back and forth in time, but surprisingly it works very well.

Brett Booth’s art is great. He does a great job with the various styles of gorillas in this story. He’s able to show a wide range of emotion in Bill’s face, keeping it ape-like but showing all too human emotion. His Tasmanian Devil is leaner and meaner then other times I’ve seen the character, but this interpretation seems to suit the character much better.

Starman/Congorilla #1 receives
4.5 out of 5

Good little one shot that might seem odd at first glance, but makes sense in tying up loose ends.
