This is basically an anthology book with a framing sequance of the mutants at Fortress X preparing for battle. We get a look at alot of the mutants and some of how looks at how this world is different.

Carey does a decent job of setting the mood and the scene of how bleak this world is for mutants. I like that there is no fully fleshed out description of the new terms and history of the new world. We’re thrown into the story and have to dig our way out.

The stories work, as each shows a different aspect of how life is horrible for the mutants. The one that makes the biggest impact is the Basilisk, we know him as Cyclops. I’d be interested in more stories of how he got to be where he is, as the executioner of Alcatraz. One simple throwaway line, that they cut off his eyelids, sums up the bleakness of the world.

I do wish that Carey had actually killed off Wolverine. Carey leaves his fate open, what happened to him sounds bad, but it would have had more impact if Wolverine was killed. This would have been one way to drive home that this world and everything was different, that nothing was held sacred.

Overall I’m interested in what Carey is trying to tell with this story, what the bigger purpose of it all will be. This serves as a good introduction to the world of the Age of X.

The art is all over the map. Only the Wolverine section, with art by Paco Diaz, is really good. The rest of the art is decent to subpar.

Age of X: Alpha receives
3 out of 5

Decent introduction to the Age of X. Enough to make me interested but not enough to blow me away.
