Paul Cornell should write the Joker from now on. He’s able to cover the entire spectrum of the Joker’s range of emotions. We get a Joker that is scared, and instantly the next insane. We get the twisted genius Joker followed by the sadistic Joker. And we even get a Joker with genuine emotion.

When the Joker talks about how life is a joke, coupled with Pete Woods amazing job on the expression of the Joker, we can genuinely feel sad and dejected, along with the Joker.

The rest of the issue is equally as good. We see Robot-Lois acting on the other programing, taking out the assistant before he can tell Lex what he’s learned. And seeing the Joker take the blame just fits the character and his portrayals. The Joker knows that if he convinced Lex that it was Robot-Lois, that it might help Lex in making the right choice. But then the Joker knows that if he takes the blame, Lex will still trust Robot-Lois and that could lead to making the wrong choice.

So now we’re left to wonder which is the correct choice after all? The one the Joker wants Lex to make, or the other?

Cornell packs this issue full of little character moments, like Lex’s off hand comment reading the paper about Bruce Wayne financing Batman. And seeing how quickly Lex attacks the Joker shows that he isn’t as in control as he would have people believe.

For an issue without much in the way of action, Pete Woods does a superb job. His work has been getting better and better. The one panel mentioned above, is amazing. The Joker shows genuine emotion. Well done.

Action Comics #897 receives
5 out of 5

I really hope that Cornell stays on the title and continues writing Lex after issue #900.
