This is my first Witchfinder book. I remember reading about the premise when the first mini-series premiered but didn’t end up picking up the book. I wanted to, just hadn’t. So I eagerly looked forward to this one, hoping to get into this new universe created by Mignola.

This isn’t the right spot to jump into the world of Sir Edward Grey. It’s not that its not a good read, it’s decent. It’s just that we’re thrown into the start of an adventure without any backstory and this first issue doesn’t really explain who Grey is or what he does. All we learn is that he’s hunting a man and that he’s an Agent of the Crown. Thats it.

Not much really happens in this issue. We learn about the mysterious church in the town of Reidlynne and why the town seems so dark. We learn that the people there, including the Sheriff, don’t like anyone asking questions and apparently asking about “him” isn’t allowed.

The issue is well done though. It’s a good read, the story flows smoothly. There are no glaring jumps in the plot. We’re given plenty of things to think about that will be revealed later. All of that is well done.

It’s just not the best place for someone new to Witchfinder to jump into.

Severin’s art is very good. He’s got a style that fits the old west. It’s dirty and rough. He’s got an eye for the details of the time.

I’ve seen his work in this genre of story before, the supernatural western, and it’s where he fits in.

Witchfinder: Lost And Gone Forever #1 receives
3.5 out of 5

It’s a good story and I’ll read more but it’s not the best place for someone new to Witchfinder to jump in.
