Love And Capes: Ever After #1 – Advanced Review

A lot of books try to capture the feel of “super heroes in real life”, trying to deal with everyday problems well at the same time trying to deal with super hero problems. A lot try. Most don’t manage to do it.

Love And Capes manages to hit the right notes.

This feels more like a relationship story then a super hero story, but Zahler perfectly captures the super hero side. Just scenes with Abby and Mark apartment hunting and having to be concerned with things like sight lines, balconies, skylights as well as closet space and washer/dryer location. That brings it all together in a way I’ve rarely seen in other books.

Even the part with Crusader (Mark) asking Windstar for real estate advice works extremely well. It’s a conversation you’d expect to see from people in everyday life, but just adding a couple lines (as well as having them in costume and flying) adds the super hero element. It’s bits like Windstar willing to help Mark free of charge, with Mark thinking it was for him helping Windstar with a super villan, but it’s really Windstar thanking him for helping with the IRS. The book is full of bits like that and it’s the details that bring it all together and make it work.

And watching Amazonia trying to act like a normal woman is well done.

I had never read the first Love And Capes, but I want to pick it up now. Zahler does a great job at melding the two worlds in a way that works where it never has before.

The art is cartoony and gives the book a fun and light feel. I love the square/box jaw that Zahler gives to Crusader. I’m usually not a big fan of the overly cartoony style, I prefer more realistic figures, but this works very well for this book and not just because it’s Zahler drawing for Zahler. The style just fits the tone of the book. I could easily see this being a cartoon and keeping the style.

A great little read that perfectly integrates the real with the super heroic.
