This is a slow issue. It’s slow moving, slow developing. It moves like zombies do, plodding.

The basic plot is fine. Spock, Kirk and McCoy take a shuttle to a colony and find it overrun with zombies. The issue deals with them on the run from the zombies, having to strand themselves to prevent the zombies from stealing a shuttle and invading the Enterprise.

It hasn’t been that long since I read a Star Trek comic book but I don’t remember the uniforms worn by the “redshirts” and those by Kirk, Spock and McCoy. The soldiers uniforms, and I take them to be some kind of Federation Soldiers, are pretty corny looking. They are not good designs at all. Even the other uniforms lack anything exciting about them.

Slow and lacking of excitment sum up this issue pretty well.

The script is decent, the characterization is pretty accurate, as it should be, the Tiptons are regular Star Trek writers. It’s just an overall lack of excitement to the entire thing. The zombie threat doesn’t come across as menacing at all.

Maloney’s art, with Erskine’s help, is decent but it too lacks excitment. The zombies seems like children’s book versions. Nothing scary or menacing, just kind of drab and plain. The city lacks in detail, nothing about it screaming “future city”.

For the most part there is nothing fundamentally wrong with Maloney’s work. There’s one panel, with the three running away, that the bodie’s positions don’t look fluid and look awkward in the running motion, but over all the work is solid if boring.

Star Trek: Infestation #1 receives
3 out of 5

Just an average story. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing overly exciting either.
