In 1985 Galoob tried to target girls with the fantasy theme made popular by He-Man & The Masters of the Universe. What they produced was Golden Girl and the Guardians of the Gemstones.

Around 6 inches tall, these figures were constructed with similar articulation to the females from the MOTU line with one new addition.

Swivel Head
Swivel Shoulders
Ball Jointed Hips
Rubber Covered Hinge Knees

While Galoob’s Golden Girl line didn’t have swivel waists like Mattel’s MOTU figures, it’s interesting to note that they do have movable knees just like Mattel’s largest girl property, Barbie. The legs were made of a soft flexible rubber with a hinged armature underneath to give the figure knee articulation without a visible knee joint.

The figures typically came with a removable Cape, Die-cast Gemstone Shield (that could double as a brooch for kids) Weapon, removable Belt, Helmet/Headress & Comb for the rooted hair on each figure. There were 11 figures in the line (9 Female & 2 Male) 2 Vehicles (Horse and Chariot combinations) a Playset and 27 Fashion Outfits (This was a girl’s toyline afterall)

Like many toylines, there was a good and evil team.

The good team, called The Guardians of the Gemstones & Prince Kroma, consisted of:

Golden Girl (Leader of the Guardians of the Gemstones)
Rubee
Jade
Saphire
Onyx
Prince Kroma

The evil team, known as The Evil Forces & The Barbarians, were made up of:

Dragon Queen (Leader of The Evil Forces)
Vultura
Moth Lady
Wild One
Ogra

The two Horse & Chariot combinations were made for the good & evil team leaders in the Golden Girl toyline. Golden Girl had Olympia with a rather normal looking chariot while Dragon Queen had Shadow who came with an evil demonic looking chariot. Both Olympia & Shadow Use mostly the same mold (the only difference being Shadow has a crystal on it’s head where Olympia has a unicorn horn) Both Horses have a light up feature where a AA battery would make their eyes and horn/jewel glow. Each Horse had an unique saddle, saddle blanket, leg clip on decorations and harnesses. Both of the Horses were also sold seperately from the chariots.

PLAYSET

The playset was called Palace of the Gems. The palace is composed of a main piece and two “wings” that fold out from the back to the sides of the main front palace. There is a staircase, drawbridge, throne, weapon rack, trap door (That falls into the Dungeon) light up torch and many other accessories. Since this is a girl’s toyline, I assume they felt the need to add a mirror/beauty area in the castle. The palace measures about 18″ long by 9″ wide when closed & 27″ long by 13″ wide when opened.

ADVENTURE FASHIONS

The 27 Adventure Fashion sets were seperated into 3 different
catagories. Each catagory has 9 outfits, one for each of the 9 girls
(Men never need to change clothes apparently) The three catagories
are:

Evening Enchantment
Festival Spirit
Forest Fantasy

The Evening Enchantment theme appears to be a ball gown theme while
Festival Spirit has a medieval look and Forest Fantasy seems to be
inspired by a native american style.

OVERVIEW
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Golden Girl toyline only lasted a year & was dwarfed by the more popular She-Ra toyline that came out at the same time. Many MOTU collectors who may not like the overly girlish look & colors of the She-Ra toyline will typically have a few Golden Girl figures to fill out their collection.
