The Dragon is dead and now Malcolm Dragon takes over. It’s an interesting place to put the series. It’s still stars a Dragon, but this one is an eighth grader that is built like a tank. Readers have long known that Larsen intended to have Malcolm take over as the main character someday and now that day has arrived.

The first page will send readers back as it’s a near duplicate of the first page of the first Savage Dragon years and years ago. It’s a near duplicate because it’s Malcolm leaping at Cutthroat’s son. It’s a nice way to start this new direction off as it pays homage to the past. Larsen also has Malcolm and Angel work with the police, again tying into the past but in a new and different way.

It’ll be interesting to see how Larsen handles this. Does he do “Dragon the Younger” and have Malcolm’s adventures mirror his dads, or will Larsen take it in new and different directions?

Emphasis is placed, in this issue, of setting up Malcolm’s status quo. He’s only in the eighth grade and now he’s a major celebrity. This issue shows how he deals with different aspects of that adoration, as well as how Angel also deals with it. I’m glad that Larsen doesn’t leave her out, and her feelings and jealousy are shown.

Larsen makes the letterer work overtime. I also like how Larsen shows that Malcolm’s powers aren’t exactly like his fathers, as he inherited some from his mother as well.

At the very least Malcolm, and Angel, will be interested to read.
