Now try to say that title 5 times fast ….

X-Men: First class gives us the new beginning for the X-Men saga, and we’ve all been waiting to see how this new film is going to adapt some favourite characters to the screen. The covers of Empire magazine finally provide anxious fans with the answer to that question.

Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to prevent nuclear Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.

The first cover features James McAvoy as Charles Xavier and gives us our first good look at Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult as the transformed — that is, blue-skinned and -furred — Mystique and Beast. (Maybe it’s the angle, but the Beast appears more … bestial than he did in the trailer.) The second spotlights Michael Fassbender as Erik Lensherr, January Jones as Emma Frost and, in another first good look, Jason Flemyng as the demonic Azazel. Empire subscribers, meanwhile, got a silver cover of McAvoy and Fassbender together; same shots, different backgrounds. Check out all of the images below.

Directed by Matthew Vaughn, X-Men: First Class also stars Lucas Till as Alex Summers/Havok, Caleb Landry Jones as Sean Cassidy/Banshee, Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw, Edi Gathegi as Darwin, Oliver Platt as the Man in Black, Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggart and Zoe Kravitz as Angel Salvadore. The movie opens on June 3.
