The problem with late books, and the first issue of this came out in December 2010, is that you end up forgetting what happened before. For example Batman mentions something about finding an amulet, and that it made him careless with rage, but I don’t remember any amulet from issue #1.

Finch is a strong storyteller. He makes great use of panel sizes, layouts and borders to make the book visually interesting. It’s a great looking book. He pays attention to details. The Penguin is scary and creepy looking. Some of my favorite panels from the book are when the Penguin’s noise is bent. It’s a nice touch.

The story is interesting but there’s alot going on. We have some monster, turns out to be Ragman, stalking and killing the homeless. We have Killer Croc and Penguin. We have the mystery and hunt for Dawn Golden. There’s intrigue at the GCPD. Jason Blood and The Demon are getting involved. And some kid has stolen the batmobile.

The last one is somewhat interesting. In a recent issue of Birds of Prey, Oracle is talking to the assembled Bat Family. This included a female character named Misfit. I wondered where she came from and who she was. Could this end up being the person we see stealing the Batmobile? Could Finch be giving his Batman book a “robin”? If so, the only question is why? And why would the DC Home Office allow it? Time will tell, but this appears to be another example of what happens when a book is late.

Overall, aside from being a great looking book, this is a decent Batman tale. I’m interested in seeing where Finch is taking it and how the various pieces will come together.

Visually stunning with a decent story.
