Colonel Mallory, the original leader of The Boys, continues his story of Vought American’s first attempt at super humans. The setting is World War II, right before the start of The Battle of the Bulge. Ennis takes the historical event and has his characters start the event. The Avenging Squad are a total group of mess-ups and Mallory barely survives to tell the tale.

This issue helps show why Vought America keeps such a tight grip on the super humans in the pages of The Boys. Left to their own devices, the super humans are just idiots.

Ennis doesn’t pull any punches. He shows just what the super humans cause and the results, and he gives props to the american soldier.

This explains why Mallory would start up The Boys. Anyone that had this happen to them would do the same thing.

McCrea’s art is nice, but he’s no Robertson, or even the Robertson-clone that is Russ Braun. Robertson’s style is so synonomous with this book that it just looks odd when someone else draws the characters.

The Boys #53 receives
