Gillen is the master of the one-liner. He’s got some good ones in this issue. He gives Namor a slightly funny edge. The bit about the protocol of when to say “imperius rex” is great. Gillen seems to have borrowed a page from Bendis’ book. The banter and interactions between the characters is the strength of the book.

The plot is pretty good as well. A Breakworld warship is heading for earth and S.W.O.R.D. needs the X-Men’s help. It’s interesting that Gillen starts his run on X-Men with characters from one of his own books, S.W.O.R.D., and the Joss Whedon storylines. I would have rather that Gillen started his run with something more original.

I do like that he’s concentrating on Kitty, who they made a big deal out of her return but has been kind of pushed aside due to recent events. What I’m wondering is why don’t they do what they did the last time she was stuck in phase form?

I’m not liking the characters he chose though. There are alot of X-Men, it would have been cooler to see some more of the others in on the action. Doctor Nemesis is a great character to read, he must be fun to write.

The Dodson’s art is beautiful. I’ve been a huge fan of Terry’s for a long time and Rachel’s inks compliment his pencils. Ponsor’s colors give it a slight metallic look though.

Uncanny X-Men #535 receives
3.5 out of 5

Gillen does good with the interactions of the cast but his initial storyline isn’t as strong.
