An interesting look at somewhat classic story type. The humans rule and they created the Auts to serve them. The Auts look human in every way but are still machines. We are shown the classic racist (aut-ist) humans. The ones that treat the Auts as slaves and machines to just use up and toss away. Even though the Auts have emotions and feelings. We are also shown humans in the middle, ones that still don’t see the Auts as equals but don’t treat them like dirt either.

The new Vice-Counsel of Sparta is one of those. And he’s the human whose point of view we see the most of. Which provides a different look. This is the man that the Auts should try to befriend. A person that could be brought over to their side, to help them get better lives. Instead fate gets in the way. The new KL unit, think an Army Captain, has an independent streak. There’s something different about this one. And he doesn’t react like normal KLs would to orders.

The two make interesting studies on the problem of the Auts. And the two views are what make this take on the story type different and unique.

The pacing of this issue is a little off. It has a jittery feel to it, like it’s skipping and not proceeding naturally. The script is pretty strong but it seems like the Vice-Counsel proceeds a little too quickly to trying to force himself on the female Aut. It’s supposed to come across that her innocence and beauty overwhelmed him, but it seems too quick for that. His actions have a forced feel to it, done to move the plot along.

Penick’s art has a different feel to it this issue. It’s more sketchy and not as tight. The Vice-Counsel looks a little different as well. It’s hard to put my finger on just what is off about it. It’s still good. He’s got a decent grasp of storytelling and nice layouts.
