Marvel Greatest Battles #2 – Wolverine & Silver Samurai

Just got this from BBTS today. The Wolverine figure wasn’t necessarily one I was caring to get, but really wanted the Silver Samurai figure. From the early pictures the figure looked dynamite.

The comic that comes with this set is very odd. The cover is from one of early issues of Wolverine’s first solo ongoing, the one that lasted hundreds of issues before Marvel started this “start and stop” method of doing series. It was by Chris Claremont and John Buscema, who did the cover. The issue reprinted inside is from one of the more recent Wolverine: Origins issues with art by Dougie Braithwaite.

The Wolverine figure is obviously based on the early Wolverine, the one on the cover, and not the more modern. So why a more modern comic was used is a bit of a mystery.

The Wolverine figure itself is decent. It’s got a good range of motion and articulation. The colors on the all black suit are good, with the darker blue highlights to give it shadow. It’s even a small figure, so that Wolverine is shorter.

The Silver Samurai is the reason to get this set and the figure is pretty impressive. It’s a hefty figure, solid and tall. The detail on the armor is very nice. The drawback is the limited range of motion because of the armor. He’s not a very posable figure.

I’m not sure if this is typical of them all or just mine, but the helmet is a bit crooked on the head. You can see it in the pictures. It’s a bit jarring and a distraction. It’s a major negative because it impacts the displayabilty of the figure.

This is not a figure you get to pose in different positions. This is a display figure and for that (minus the head issue, which could just be mine as I haven’t seen any more of the figure) the Silver Samurai looks impressive.

EDIT: I tried posing the Silver Samurai a bit more and the lower body is pretty poseable. The legs swivel 360 at the thighs, and knees and ankles bend and the lower legs can swivl 360 below the knees. See the new pictures.

Wolverine receives:
3 out of 5

As an “action” figure this is a bland one as it’s an unremarkable outfit.

Silver Samurai receives:
4 out of 5

I didn’t remove for the head issue because I’m not sure if it’s just mine or all. If all then the grade would go down.

Overall it’s a decent set to get.
