This ends Ed Brubaker’s run on Secret Avengers and it’s the oddest way to end a comic I’ve ever read.

It ends on a cliffhanger and there are no plans to pick up the threads. Ed Brubaker has said that he doesn’t have plans to continue it and the next year or so worth of stories won’t revolve around the Shadow Council or anything that Brubaker set up.

It doesn’t make any sense.

I can’t believe editorial allowed it.

The origin of John Steele opens up so many mysteries that it just doesn’t work leaving it open like this with no plans to continue it. This was planned?

The nice thing is that the origin brings some things full circle. The scene of Thorndrake chasing down a man that opened the series to begin with now gets some meaning. It opens up the Shadow Council to more questions. Who is this higher power? How/why did it give John Steele powers?

But none of it will be answered.

The art is servicable. It does the job. That’s about all I can say about it.

The cover is a bit odd. Deodato does a horrible job of doing the wings on Cap’s head. It looks odd.

Secret Avengers #12 receives
2.5 out of 5

The story itself is good but this is a horrible way to end Brubaker’s run.
