So the Schism event mini-series is being written by Jason Aaron. The prelude is written by Paul Jenkins. Why?

This is an interesting issue. The X-Men are on the verge of… well something.. We don’t know what is going to happen. But it’s bad. It can lead to the death of every mutant on Utopia. Scott Summers is left to decide if they will stay and fight or evacuate.

The story is told though the point of view of Professor Xavier. In it he examines his relationship with Scott Summers and a couple of important moments are highlighted. The moments are about Scott wanting to be normal. He laments about how he just wants to be able to look at Jean. The first flashback is visually interesting as Scott has his glasses off and is just staring at the sky with his optic beams lighting up the night.

The idea of the story, I think, is to show how Scott became the man he is today. The Professor spends alot of it saying how proud he is of Scott and how Scott did what he could never do.

We’re left hanging, wondering what the threat is and what Scott’s decision is.

This highlights how strong a writer Jenkins can be. There’s alot of meat to this story, alot of emotion, and Jenkins makes it work very well. There’s a nice flow to the story, to the narration.

It’s an interesting way to start off the Schism event.

La Torre’s art is nice. He creates a couple of real nice visuals. Loughridge’s art really helps the visual carry alot of impact. There’s no action, so La Torre has to carry the story through the expressions and movements of the characters.

His style takes what could of been a fairly basic story and makes it something stronger.

X-Men: Prelude to Schism receives
4.5 out of 5

An interesting story, odd way to start off the event, but a well done story.
