I have to admit that I have never read a Rocketeer comic by Dave Stevens. A shame, I know. I watched the movie and liked it and of course know who the Rocketeer is and what his history is. But I had never read an actual comic.

This anthology pays tribute to the character created by the late Dave Stevens. It takes some of the top talents in comics and lets them loose with the Rocketeer.

The first issue features work from John Cassaday (writing and drawing), Mike Allred and Kurt Busiek with Michael Kaluta. There’s a couple pin-ups by Mike Mignola and Jim Silke.

The stories are short but good. Each carries a tone that fits the style and feel of the Rocketeer. There’s a feel of the swashbuckling style of the character along with the fantastical nature.

The stories highlight aspects that each creator probably most enjoyed about the character.

Rocketeer fans will enjoy this anthology but if you’re not a fan of the character then there isn’t anything here for you. There are no retellings of the origin, just a couple short adventures.

The Rocketeer Adventures #1 receives
4 out of 5

A very well done tribute series that carries the feel and tone of the original.
