So Daniel Way and Jason Pearson (with Sara Pichelli helping) are in the middle of a storyline in Astonishing X-Men. So what does #38 do? It starts a new storyline.

Right in the middle of a current one, a new creative team starts a new story.

They at least make reference to the Way/Pearson story in this one. Which is nice. That doesn’t happen very often. I wish there would be more explanations for how Wolverine can be in the X-Men one day, the Avengers another and X-Force the third, let alone all the trouble he gets into in two solo series. So it’s good to see that Marvel acknowledges that they are adding another story into the mix.

I remember reading the press release on this, but still don’t understand why they are doing it. Why not finish up the Way/Pearson and then start the Gage/Bobillo one?

But this story does have one great thing going for it:

Yep, this is the first encounter between them since Kitty’s return. Except it’s got the new Gillen-ized Lockheed from the short-lived S.W.O.R.D. series. That means it’s the hard-drinking bad-ass one. I liked it better when Lockheed didn’t talk.

The story is basic. The Brood take over a S.W.O.R.D. satellite and the X-Men come to help.

Bobillo’s art is hit and miss. There are some nice panels and there are some not nice ones. He puts alot of work into most of the book, but then some of them just look rushed. He draws an interesting Beast. I wonder if S.W.O.R.D. would have done better if Bobillo had been on art and not Sanders. Sanders’ Beast was horrible.

Bobillo is cartoony but it’s a nice cartoony. His Lockheed is too thin and skeletal.

Astonishing X-Men #38 receives
3.5 out of 5

A decent story on it’s own, but an odd place to start the new storyline.
