I wonder if I’m the only fan of Wynonna Earp from the Wildstorm days. I liked the premise and I was glad to see that IDW was giving Beau Smith another chance at getting this story out there.

I had wondered where Smith had been hiding. Smith has always been one of those creators that has a loyal following but never quite made it over the hump. He does a certain type of story, whether it was Parts Unknown or Wynonna Earp, and he’s good at the story that he does. This issue shows what he’s good at.

There’s not going to be any high concepts. It’s a pretty straight forward story. But what Smith does bring is a hard nosed style. It’s no nonsense. The story goes from Point A to Point B and along the way you’ll get some tough guys talking the talk.

If you’re expecting something deep, don’t look here. But if you’re looking for something fun and fast paced, then this will be you.

Smith creates a deeper story here, with lots of layers, but the writing and script allow the story to move around at a clip. The characters are engaging and entertaining. Even when a named character just appears out of nowhere, she falls easily into the cadence of the rest of the cast.

Villagran’s art is decent enough but it’s not as good as could be. He’s got a decent grasp of storytelling with some good and well rendered characters. The backgrounds are somewhat lacking and the linework could be better. The figures are stiff. Better and more energetic artwork would help this story alot.

Wynonna Earp: The Yeti Wars #2 receives
3.5 out of 5

A decent story that with better art would be a greater product.
