Superman #712

This story takes place shortly after Infinite Crisis when Superboy was killed and Superman disappeared.

I wasn’t originally planning on reviewing this issue until I heard the story that DC unexpectedly changed the contents of the story. So out of curiousity to see how an old story from 2007 would read today and what shelved story DC decided to run with, I moved this book up my reading pile.

And I’m glad I did.

I’m a dog lover, as I’m sure many people are. If you’re not a dog lover, you’ll never understand the bond between a dog and it’s person. It’s a strong bond. It’s a loyal bond and it’s a lasting bond.

Busiek must be a dog lover.

This was an absolutely amazing and touching story. A real dog lover will get choked up reading this story. I’m surprised it was shelved and DC never published it, but in a way I’m glad because otherwise I never would have gotten a chance to read it as I wasn’t reading Superman back in 2007.

The story revolves around Krypto looking for Superboy. Using his super sniffer he follows old scents around the world and we’re shown what happened at those points in time. The story opens with Krypto on the porch, waiting for Superboy to return. It’s a look back at Superboy’s life, but it’s also the story of Krypto looking for his best friend.

It’s from Krypto’s point of view, so there really aren’t any words, just what are seen in the flashbacks, but the story is strong and powerful. Leonardi’s art is great. He captures the emotions of Krypto perfectly. You feel for the dog as he realizes his best friend is gone. Wonderful work.

Superman #712 receives
5 out of 5

Dog lovers of the world beware, you’ll get choked up.
