AP news reports that Marvel’s patriotic hero will keep his name in theaters around most of the world. Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios gave distributors worldwide an option to shorten the title from “Captain America; The First Avenger” to the shorter and less American “The First Avenger.” The shorter title, which omits the name of the central superhero, might have played better in countries not satisfied with American foreign policy, economics, or America in general.

In most of the world the distributors opted to keep the full title reflecting the Marvel comic character. The brand value out weighed any potential anti-American sentiments. Russia, Ukraine and South Korea are the only countries where the shorter title will be used.

Movie title changes are common. Titles often changes for cultural reasons or because the original names don’t translate well.

Captain America: The First Avenger will follow Thor into theaters later in July. Instead of opening during the nations patriotic weekend, against Transformers 3, the movie is opening on the less patriotic weekend of July 22.
