Now this is how you wrap up a book. Miller has known that his version of Batgirl, Stephanie Brown, would be ending and Barbara Gordon would be returning to the costume (and to walking) in DC’s relaunch. So he had to wrap up his run. He could have just left it hanging like alot of other DC books seem to be doing, but instead he took the plans he had and altered them to wrap up the series and leave Stephanie in a good place.

He’s said in interviews that this arc was meant to be longer, that Stephanie’s confrontation with her dad was meant to be longer. But he did a great job in the space he had. The shortened confrontation still carried the weight it needed. And he saved space to give us a hint of what could have been, some of his possible future plans for Batgirl. And what alot of fun it would have ended up being if he had been allowed to continue.

He even was able to work in an emotional scene between Stephanie and her mother, having her mother learn her identity. It’s obviously not how he originally intended it, but it works just like it is.

It’s alot to cram into an issue, but Miller manages to pull it off. And Stephanie maintains everything that made her an excellant Batgirl. This was consistently one of my favorite titles to read every month and most likely I’ll be investing in the trades (and it’s extremely rare that I do so). This is the one title I’m going to miss the most when DC relaunches.

Pere Perez grew as an artist over the course of his time on the book. He became the perfect artist for Batgirl. He captured her look and movement perfectly and even a star like Dustin Nguyen couldn’t match what Perez brought to the book. The entire creative team on the book will be missed.

Batgirl #24 receives
5 out of 5

Extremely sad to see this book go. The new Batgirl will be hard pressed to match this one.
