This issue had very interesting pacing. It’s extremely flashback heavy, but they add depth to the overall story and don’t detract from it in anyway.

Most flashbacks tell some backstory but don’t really add much meat to the main story. In this issue, the flashbacks are more important then the main story. The main story is really only 3 or 4 pages long and really involves Sonny and Cheri driving alot. The flashbacks flesh out what started all this (the finding of the money) and how the lives of Sonny, Kim, Cheri and Rex all intersected.

There’s a sadness to the flashback. We saw last issue where these people ended up and the flashback helps give us some idea of how they got there. In a way it’s an examination of small town life. We’ve heard stories, and possibly seen examples, of situations like this happening all over. Big star athletes in high school never leave their small town, reliving their glory days forever. Or the kids that got into trouble and it just starts a spiral down that gets deeper and deeper. The characters in the first issue, and where they are at, after reading the second we can see how they all ended up where they are. Latour does a great job bringing it all together.

Some books, when connections like this are shown, it feels forced. Loose Ends comes across as natural. I could easily see this translating into a movie or show.

Brunner’s art isn’t as strong as the first issue. The colors of the flashbacks don’t help the art. It’s still pretty strong in the technical aspects and the storytelling, but it has a rushed feel compared to the first issue.

Loose Ends #2 receives
3.5 out of 5

A solid second issue that fleshs out the characters more.
