Quick Thought Reviews For The Week Of 08/17/11
Published on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 by

Another week of new books and it’s time to do the round up.

Generation Hope #10
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Kieron Gillen
Penciled by: Tim Seeley

You have to read Schism #3 before this issue. This shows what Idie is up to before, and immediately after, the events of Schism. Idie is an interesting character. Someone that has had it beaten into her so badly that she believes what is said about her. Her reaction to doing what Cyclops says is sad in a way. Sad that she thinks it’s okay for her to kill because she’s a monster. Seeley’s art is very nice.

Uncanny X-Men #542
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Kieron Gillen
Penciled by: Greg Land

I like all the different ideas/plans/combinations that Cyclops uses to try and stop the Juggernaut. Good stuff. The bit with Illyana bringing Colussus and Kitty to try to convince Cyrottak to take away Juggies power is good as well. It’s too bad that the ending has been teased for awhile now. Takes away some of the stories suspense. Good art by Land.

Avengers Academy #18
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Christos Gage
Penciled by: Andrea Di Vito

Not Di Vito’s best art. I like how the three most obvious to turn into villians; Hazmat, Striker and Finesse; are the ones that end up needing to save the day. Nice to see them realize they aren’t as nice as the others and use some dirty tricks. Didn’t like how Reptyl was taken out of the fight so quickly.

The Boys: Butcher, Baker, Candlestickmaker #2
Published by: Dynamite Entertainment
Written by: Garth Ennis
Art by: Darick Robertson

Continuing the origin of Billy Butcher, leader of The Boys. Did Ennis ever serve because he’s always had a knack for getting into the head of a soldier. His war stories ring true. He doesn’t glorify it, he tells the truth. This issue starts to show us where Butcher gets his violent streak from.

X-Factor #224
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Peter David
Penciled by: Emanuela Lupacchino

For a crazy, puked up pile of rage Rahne’s kid is pretty cute. Interesting angle that David took with the story. Wonder how it will all play out. Rahne’s come a long way and not all of it good.

Ultimate Fallout #6
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Various
Art by: Various

This was a good way to end a major event mini-series. Loose ends are tied up. Characters get their closure. And new threads are started up. Nice way to end the old Ultimate universe and start up the new.

Captain America #2
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Ed Brubaker
Penciled by: Steve McNiven

McNiven’s pencils are dynamite and the story by Brubaker is interesting. It’s different from his other Cap stories, has a different vibe to it.
