Hack/Slash/Eva: Monster’s Ball #3

“Had I right, for my own benefit, to inflict this curse upon everlasting generations? I had before been moved by the sophisms of the being I had created; I had been struck senseless by his fiendish threats; but now, for the first time, the wickedness of my promise burst upon me; I shuddered to think that future ages might curse me as their pest, whose selfishness had not hesitated to buy its own peace at the price, perhaps, of the existence of the whole human race. -M.W. Shelley, Frankenstien, 20.1

Cassie Hack and her lumbering sidekick Vlad are supernatural butt kickers. Their main comic, Hack/Slash, recently moved to Image Comics where it is enjoying a successful start. However, Cassie and Vlad are still guesting around the comic shop shelves. One such collaboration is the team up with Cheerleaders vs Zombies and the limited release exploits with Mercy Sparx. The duo is currently working with Eva in Hack/Slash/Eva: Monster’s Ball #3. Check out the preview.

Brandon Jerwa and Cezar Razek began this cross over with insults and upskirts, but in the third installment the jokes and skirts are gone. Instead Cassie Hack and Eva are fighting to save Micheal, the creation of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, to satisfy a new doctors meglomania and a cross-dimensional Lovecraft-Shelley. Crazy crazy characters pulled together in Detroit to stop bad people from doing bad things with souless technology. In its own way, it is another retelling of Frankenstien’s dilemma of creation.

Crazy characters and head bashing female protagonists make this feel like a Tim Seeley Hack/Slash even though he only provided the covers.

I did miss Eva’s old world views of Cassie’s wardrobe. That was funny in issue #2.

a costume change later and the ladies are ready for business

The Werewolves of Detroit were interesting in the earlier issues as well. Instead, this comic focuses on Detroit’s underground S.W.A.T. team, the Ghosts of Detroit. Cassie, Vlad, and Eva team up with the local generic militia to kick a variety of butt from werewolves to lizard men to whatever that naked guy is doing. When the Ghosts show up, the locals know it is about to get bloody and violent.

Dr. Praetorious has joined forces with Mary Shelley Lovecraft, and they’re looking to make some changes around here. (Note: by “around here” we mean “across our entire reality” – which is not a good thing!) Meanwhile, our heroes are doing their best to stay alive on the mean streets of Detroit…which happen to be crawling with freaks, weirdos and monster hit-squads!
