Dhoom 3!

Dhoom translates into English loosely as explosion. How can you not love an action movie titled explosion? If you’ve missed this bollywood action film, Dhoom, I heartedly recommend checking it out. It is a fun film with a police action movie astride motorcycles. The second film is a continuation with larger chases and bigger action.

I’ve been a fan of Dhoom and Dhoom 2 for a while. It always bothered me that the characters did not reprise the role for a Dhoom 3. The third movie in this trilogy had at one point been in the works but stalled out. Some sources cited public pressure stopping the film makers from returning to the franchise. There was some concern that the movies were leading young people into dangerous driving habits. Actors were also arrested after Dhoom 2 because of some questionable on scene kissing which is tame by American standards. Honestly, it is tame by modern Bollywood standards too but this movie was used as a conservative talking point trying to prove a point. The public overwhelmingly was on the side of the film. The Dhoom franchise could go down in Bollywood cinema history as a turning point in film. It isn’t completely alone, but it does seem to be a particular target for conservatives and the new vanguard.

Dhoom 3 sounded like an economic reality given that the first two movies were popular, were box office successes, and sold well on DVD internationally. I am excited to realize that Dhoom 3 is coming out! In a little more than a year the third movie will race into box offices.

On 2 February 2011, Yash Raj Films confirmed that the third installment of the series would go on floors at the end of 2011 and planned for a December 2012 release. The film will feature Aamir Khan playing a negative character while Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra will reprise their roles. Dhoom 3 will be directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya (Victor). It was announced that the composer of Dhoom and Dhoom 2, Pritam, will return once again to compose the music of the third installment.

Even better, the original stars and composer are all returning to the project! I particularly enjoy Uday Chopra in both films. While all of the actors are good, Chopra has a lovability that translates well into the action, humor side kick role.

I won’t be able to catch Dhoom 3 in theaters but I’ll grab it on DVD. If you like great chase movies and don’t mind reading subtitles this is a great piece of Bollywood to check out.
