The Library #1

Sela Mathers gets lost in a good book in Grimm Fairy Tales Presents: The Library #1 from Zenescope.

Recently, I was chatting with a colleague about the decline of the library. The school libraries have become media centers. Local libraries are struggling to bring people in. Digital devices are being blamed for the decline in local library numbers. Budget cuts also pose a distinct threat. As a die-hard library supporter I’m always concerned when it looks like they may not last forever as repositories of knowledge.

Perhaps that is why I gravitated toward a Zenescope title called “The Library.” This book is situated in the present moment when libraries are viewed as real estate instead of shrines. Like my above digression, the current economic back drop is not the main focus, but it is clearly presented. Rich man Mathers has bought a library. His daughter, Sela, is impressed because unlike her brother and father she loves books. The father sees the building as a project and the books need to be cleared out. As the father gets into a shouting match with the librarian his kids are off exploring the grand library.

The young lad is unimpressed until Sela convinces him that they’ve found a book of magic. She’s joking but she seems right.

Sela gets lost in a good book. Absolutely. So does her brother. Greek mythology and dinosaurs should be in the next issue. This is positioned to be a literary romp for survival. Think Joe the Barbarian in the library instead of a toy room. Think Unwritten. Think Kill Shakespeare. Think fun!

This is an alternate tale, and a non-standard portion of the Grimm’s universe. That means this is a great jumping on point for new readers. This book is accessible whether you’ve read the other Zenescope titles or not. Fun set up for the story and nice art create a book worth checking out.
