Quick Thoughts Reviews For 10/05/11

Starting this week I’ll be giving the quick thought reviewed books a rating like the full fledged ones.

Justice League International #2
Published by: DC Comics
Written by: Dan Jurgens
Penciled by: Aaron Lopresti

Being around these guys has knocked Batman’s IQ down alot. How come no one has noticed or commented that the giant robot’s shooting some kind of light from it’s palms into the sky? That seems like a pretty obvious thing to look at and investigate. This team is a shambles. And who/what is Godiva? We know nothing about her except that she has the hots for Booster.

Stormwatch #2
Published by: DC Comics
Written by: Paul Cornell
Penciled by: Miguel Sepulveda

Sepulveda’s art is hit or miss. Some pages look great and some look bad. Even the characters change appearance from panel to panel. The story is interesting. This is an interesting team that Cornell has established. Adam One seems a bit crazy and it’s odd why the Manhunter would think so highly of him. Harry Tanner is interesting. Hard to tell if he’s really bad or just misdirection. I do like that the group is very disfunctional.

The Boys #59
Published by: Dynamite Entertainment
Written by: Garth Ennis
Art by: Russ Braun

NOT THE DOG!! NOT TERROR!! Butcher’s reaction to the death of his dog is downright scary. Repeating the words sends a chill. Interesting issue that sets up the concluding arcs. BUT WHY THE DOG?? Braun’s art adds to the scariness. The absolute blank look on Butcher’s face is incredible. BUT WHY THE DOG??

The Boys #59 receives

G.I. Joe #6
Published by: IDW Publishing
Written by: Chuck Dixon
Art by: Will Rosado

Rosado’s art is much better then Saltares. The story was pretty good. The poor Joes just can’t catch a break during the Cobra Civil War. They need to start winning. They aren’t coming across as all that good if they keep getting their butts handed to them all the time. Bludd is stepping up in the war.

G.I. Joe #6 receives
3.5 out of 5

Fear Itself: Hulk vs Dracula #2
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Victor Gischler
Penciled by: Ryan Stegman

We’re supposed to care about the Forgiven right? We’re supposed to care about Raizo Kodo right? These are supposed to be major new characters right? Crappy way to introduce them. Bored with this story and we don’t get enough of the Forgiven to care.

Fear Itself: Hulk Vs. Dracula receives
2.5 out of 5

Batwing #2
Published by: DC Comics
Written by: Judd Winick
Art by: Ben Oliver

I really like Oliver’s linework and his layouts. He’s a really good artist except I can’t stand when he does the fully shadow panels. I don’t like it and it’s distracting from the otherwise stellar art he does.

I liked Winick’s story. Batwing is an interesting character. I like what Winick is trying to build here and I know this title was added to give DC more “diversity” but so far there isn’t anything that really make Batwing stand out as African. Really, this story could take place almost anywhere and be the same.

Action Comics #2
Published by: DC Comics
Written by: Grant Morrison
Penciled by: Rags Morales & Brent Anderson

I like what Morrison is doing and how he is setting up Superman. Was this version raised by the Kents? If so, their influence doesn’t seem to be evident. I do like how this Superman will have to choose between defending humans or fighting them. He’s been tortured by them, so why would he protect them? Be interesting to see how Morrison answers that one. Love how Lex kept saying “it”. The art was pretty good.
