This was a book I picked up at NYCC. Had a nice conversation with Neil Gibson about comics and what people look for in them.

This is the story of Rick. He starts off as a normal, everyday person until he has the vision of a cat dying. It comes true and from their his normal life goes to hell. When the story opens Rick has not left his apartment for a year. The visions of people dying are too much. It’s what happens at the end of the issue that starts this series off on it’s trip.

The issue is mostly set-up. It’s the next issue where things get going. But even though it’s set-up, it’s extremely interesting. Gibson’s story flows smoothly and keeps the reader hooked. You sympthasize with Rick and what he is going through. It’s the scene with the girlfriend and how he sees her die that really hits home how tortured Rick has become. And yeah, I wouldn’t leave the house after that either.

There are a couple of hooks in the story to keep the reader interested in picking up the next issue. It’s very well paced and well done. The last page alone would be enough to make the reader get #2, but the reason why Rick chooses to leave his apartment after a year never gets answered. And it’s a question that I’m interested in hearing.

The art is very nice. It’s got a different style to it, not truly real but not cartoony. The characters all look differently and Gibson does a good job depicting various forms of death without going overboard with too much gore. The transformation of Rick from normal person to couch potatoe is well done. Gibson does good showing the gut and manboobs that a year of doing nothing but video games and take-out would cause.

Tortured Life #1 receives
4 out of 5

For a story that is mostly set-up, it’s still extremely interesting and intriguing.
