Comic books based on video games are alot of the time odd books. They want to capture the feel of the game but at the same time have the depth of a comic book. Most of the time it feels and you have an odd reading comic book Move one direction too far and you lose too much. Usually it makes sense to move closer to the comic book side, get rid of the elements that made it a great game and keep the story elements and build off those.

Duke Nukem: Glorious Bastard went the other way. This is a comic book that knows it’s a video game and knows what is expected of the star. It doesn’t try to make a deep story. This is a Duke Nukem game come to life. And that’s the way it should be.

Not to say that it’s not a good story because it is. It’s just not a deep story. What you see is what you get. Straight ahead alien-ass-kicking and Duke doing what Duke does best, bag the babes and kick ass.

Waltz’s script is perfect for a book starring Duke. There’s jokes, over the top situations and none of it feels out of place or forced. Just having Duke appear sets a tone and expectation level for the book and Waltz answers those expectations. In a way this is the kind of comic book that is needed if the industry is to get new readers. It’s one that can serve as a gateway comic. The tone and feel will appeal to the fans of the game and that will hopefully lead them to read other comics. Super heroes won’t draw in the new readers, but a book like this can.

It’s a good comic book at the same time. A fun read.

Xermanico’s art has gotten better with each issue. The work in this issue was excellant. Here’s hoping to see more of his work in the near future.
