Farscape Vol. 6: Compulsions

Boom studios blast out of the gate again with the sixth trade collecting stories from their ongoing Farscape comic series. Penned by series creatorRockneS.O’Bannon and Keith R.A. DeCandido, volume 6 collects the Compulsions storyline. A tale of love, betrayal, conspiracies, and a bounty hunter that just won’t quit, Compulsions is a fully realized story within the universe of Crichton and Company.

The fluidity between O’Bannon and DeCandido is amazingly well done. DeCandido is obviously a fan of this cult show and his love shines through along with O’Bannons talent. They’ve managed to capture the spirit of the show very well.  However, this also can work against them. The television show was a densely written affair that required the attention of the viewer to follow along and the comic is no different.

New readers can pick up snippets of what’s going on prior to the start of the story, but will quickly get lost in what is going on if they do not have a decent base of understanding as to characters, plot, and previous stories. This is a property that delves deep into its own past and the reader needs to have that knowledge to fully enjoy and follow along. A must for fans of the series and for casual fans, but they might want to start at Volume 1.

The artwork of Will Sliney is not consistent throughout the stories. At times coming across as a form of cell shading, then into a awkward blurry images. The panels come across as a static flash animation that refuses to move. It detracts from the realism that is needed to ground the far out story into some form of realistic setting. However, it can be used well to represent dreams or visions.

Bottom line: if you are a fan of the series, this is the book for you. It comes with the twist, turns, and intrigue that you expect from Farscape. If you want to jump in without the back story of the television series, you may want to grab volume 1 and take it from there.
