I have to confess that I don’t remember this whole Rose Red becoming a Paladin of Hope thing. When did that happen? That doesn’t happen very often, when I don’t remember a storyline, especially in a book that I really enjoy, like Fables.

But that doesn’t get in the way of enjoying the story. Willingham does a good job of making sure that the reader can get into this story without having to remember it’s beginnings. All that is needed to know is that Rose is going to become a new Paladin. This issue is about hope, in it’s various forms, and Rose is guided on a journey to meet the remaining Paladins/Avatars of Hope. There used to be fourteen, now there’s only three.

The story itself is extremely well structured. It’s a Christmas story and it follows the structure of Dickens ‘A Christmas Carol’. Rose Red visits three spirits that tell/show her things that change her thinking. What’s interesting is how Willingham portrays the various aspects of hope. The Hope For Justice is a surprise, but the way Willingham explains it is perfect. The other two aspects are equally good, but the first is really well chosen, especially considering the time of year and season.

Normally Willingham does a great job managing the huge cast and various plotlines of Fables. And this issue is no exception, except for the whole ‘Rose Red becoming a Paladin for Hope’ thing, but that’s more my lack of remembering then anything wrong with the story that Willingham crafts.

Buckingham does some great work in this series and this issue is well done. I love the framing details that Buckingham puts into many of the pages. This issue uses some chapter breaks and Buckingham integrates them very nicely into the layout of the pages.
