This is based on the old Avengers tv series. Obviously, because of the Marvel Comic, it couldn’t call itself the Avengers, so we get Steed And Mrs. Peel.

I never watched the old show. I’ve seen clips and I know what it was about. Just that general knowledge, that pretty much anyone would possess, is enough to get into this comic. Morrison doesn’t spend any time explaining who the characters are, he relies on the reader having the basic general knowledge of the concept. In most cases this usually doesn’t work, but in this case, and perhaps it’s just because of my prior knowledge, it works and it’s good that no time was spent on backstory. It allows us to get straight to the mystery.

And it looks like it could be an interesting one with a couple of twists before it’s done.

I don’t know if the show had this quirky charm, but the comic definately has it. It’s obvious Morrison is having fun with the characters and the world. There’s something definately british about the whole thing, from the writing to the art. And it fits the time period this is supposed to take place in.

The script is excellant, the characters interesting and unique. Morrison moves the plot along at a good clip, never losing the reader, keeping us interested and along for the ride.

I wasn’t too sure how well this would hold my interest, but it is definately a book I’ll be picking up.

The art by Gibson is great. It fits the time period and carries the same charm that Morrison’s script does. He does some interesting things with the layouts and nails alot of the time period details. The crazy stuff he throws into Fanshawe’s house is great.

Steed And Mrs. Peel #1 receives
