Johnstown, PA is known for the massive flooding.  The town has been hit by massive floods, one that was a result of rich arrogance and another was a fluke of nature.  Like many other PA towns, Johnstown was a steel city and lost its main industries vitality when Pittsburgh did.  Now, the small town, nestled into gorgeous mountains, uses seasonal tourism to help support its local industry. The motorcycle rally is one of the countries largest best kept secrets in the biker community. The wine tastings and independent films bring people to the area from all over the world.

Casey Bassett, 23, of South Fork, is the convention’s sole organizer, owner of Assett Conventions LLC and self-published author of “Z-SAT: The Zombie Survival Aptitude Test,” a scantron-style test that measures readers’ zombie apocalypse survival prowess, which has seen positive reviews on ThinkGeek.com and Amazon.com.

Recently laid off from his position at Concurrent Technologies Corporation’s Systems Tecnology Center, he’s been pouring himself into planning the convention.

“I eat, breathe and sleep this convention. That’s what it takes to make a convention successful. All day, every day I’m working on something to promote it. This first year is the most important,” said Bassett.

The town that knows how to host visitors is now going to host a sci-fi convention. If you’ll be in the area then you should check it out. Also, keep Steel City in mind. Check out Bent Wookie Comix for more information, it is a great comic shop that I enjoyed when I lived in the area. Bent Wookie is a great nerd meca. BENT WOOKEE COMIX is located at 127 Fairfield Ave. Johnstown Pa. (right on the main drag, next to the beer mart….how convenient!) If you’re stopping by the Sci-Fi Con then you’ll need to check out the local comic shop.
