Quick Thought Reviews For 02/22/12
Published on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 by

Every week Troy reads a ton of books and doesn’t have time to fully review them all. For those that don’t make the cut, there are quick thoughts.

There’ll be a couple of last weeks books in with this weeks. Still trying to catch up from the trip.

Morning Glories #16
Published by: Image Comics
Written by: Nick Spencer
Art by: Joe Eisma

I loved Lost. I loved that there were some things unexplained. Loved that there were some things you had to wait on to get explanations. I loved the mystery of it all. Morning Glories is not Lost. There needs to be some explanations in this book. Nothing that has been shown makes sense. There’s too much mystery. Nothing has been explained and the biggest hole is the main point of the story itself: the school. This issue has Miss Hodge explaining to Casey that she has to save her friends, and now Casey is in the past. Okay, but what does she have to save her friends from? What threat? So far all we know is that no one can leave MGA and that there is something sinister going on. That’s it. Too much mystery, not enough explanation.

Eisma is growing as an artist but he still needs some work. All the soldiers looked alike. It was hard to tell who was who.

The Sixth Gun #19
Published by: Oni Press
Written by: Cullen Bunn
Art by: Brian Hurtt

This just gets better and better. We see more of the Knights Of Solomon and get some of Drake’s history at the same time. The towns of Penance and New Penance are very cool and add some supernatural horror to the mythos. Can’t wait to see what the well really is. Excellant art by Hurtt.

Cobra #10
Published by: IDW Publishing
Written by: Mike Costa
Art by: Alex Cal

Seriously, Alex Cal is going to be hated by the rest of the industry. There are artists that can’t even get a book out a month and he’s got 3 of them going at the same time for 3 months in a row. That’s pretty amazing. And it’s all top notch work. He’s going to be a hated man. The story was good. Nice to see the Cobra High Command up to no good. Interesting that the Baroness is working so closely with Krake, figured she would want in on the conspiracy. It’s good to see that they’re going to reveal some of the Council, hope there are some surprises in there. And the last page, interesting.

Voodoo #6
Published by: DC Comics
Written by: Joshua Williamson
Art by: Sami Basri

Like last issue, this one opens in a way that makes you feel like you missed something. I don’t remember the ship taking off. At least Williamson does a good job of bringing this book in line with other Daemonite-related events in Grifter, Stormwatch and Superman. I thought the Black Razors were connected to the FBI? Now they’re part of the Blackhawks? Basri’s art continues to be strong.

Teen Titans #6
Published by: DC Comics
Written by: Scott Lobdell
Penciled by: Brett Booth

Another DC book that makes me feel like I missed an issue. Kid Flash starts having issues out of the blue. Okay. Sure. But what was the point of Grymm? Two punches and he’s out? Cassie called him a “world class” threat? To who? The X-Babies? This issue was filled with needless exposition. Lobdell felt he had to explain everything to us, because otherwise no one would have a clue what was going on. Brett Booth needs to be on a better book.

The Ray #3
Published by: DC Comics
Written by: Justin Gray & Jimmy Palmiotti
Penciled by: Jamal Igle

Why couldn’t this have been one of the New 52. It’s better then probably half the current books. Why just four issues? I’ll be disappointed to see this one end. Never been a big Igle fan, but I’m enjoying his work on this series.

The Mighty Thor #11
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Matt Fraction
Art by: Pasqual Ferry w/ Pepe Larraz

Waste of a storyline. All the hype of Tanarus and this is what we get? Four issues of what will amount to a filler storyline? What was the point to it?
