This is how you open up an anthology-style spin-off. You have the main books creator write the story and you get a superstar artist to draw it. You also make it a story that is important to the overall mythos of the world.

Fairest tells the story of Briar Rose, who last in Fables had let herself be put to sleep to put the imperial city to sleep. As we had seen in Fables, she was kidnapped by some Goblins that had looted and burned the city. This story brings Ali Baba into the picture and he’s seeking riches.

Willingham throws some curve balls and speed bumps into the story. From the imp who’s got his own agenda, to the wooden soldier out for revenge, there’s alot going on in this book and Willingham handles it all smoothly. The story flows naturally. The first person captions is something I don’t think I’ve seen in a Fables book before but they work well.

Jonah the imp is a riot. Yes, he’s constantly naked, but it’s not noticeable and really the only reason it stood out was because I had read an article about it, and the little controversy it stirred up. It’s an imp. It’s a fairytale creature. It’s a mature readers book. Moving on.

The jargon the imp uses is great and the reaction by Ali Baba is priceless. But I do have to say that Willingham is being very cruel. Saying the imp has all six seasons of Firefly? That’s just mean. Cruel and unusual punishment.

There’s a reason that Fables is one of the top books being published today and Fairest is a welcome addition, at least this opening story. Anthologies can be hit or miss, but as long as the stories are all as interesting and connected as this one, it’ll be a good series.

The art is by Phil Jimenez. That should tell you all you need to know about how the art is. He doesn’t do enough work.
